Heifer International

As the holiday season (and end of the tax year) approaches, this is a time of year that many of us think about making our most significant charitable contributions.

One of my favorite organizations is Heifer International.  Their mission is to end hunger and crippling poverty by teaching people sustainable agricultural techniques and providing them with livestock and plants to sustain their families and villages and possibly provide a small income.  Heifer’s approach can be summed up with the old proverb, “Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; you have fed him for a lifetime.”

I like Heifer’s approach because it not only focuses on fighting poverty, hunger, malnutrition, and economic injustice, but it addresses the problems in such a way to emphasize personal responsibility and good environmental stewardship.

One Response to “Heifer International”

  1. I really like and respect Heifer as well. My dad and I went out to their farm in Arkansas one summer to see demonstrations of some of their programs. It was really cool. They definitely follow the “nothing is wasted” ethic.
